High-temperature non-oxide ceramics, such as SiC, Si3N4, Sialon, ZrB2 and TiB2, have been extensively studied during the last two decades since they can be used as structural materials in temperature conditions up to about 1500 T. They have potential application in various fields including advanced engines, gas turbines for power/steam cogeneration, heat exchangers, heat treatment and material growth furnaces, as well as in future nuclear reactors. This mini-review, summarizes recent developments in the preparation of high-temperature non-oxide ultrafine powders for structural applications by sol-gel processing. Compared to conventional solid-state reaction methods. the sol-gel process is a more effective means of producing high performance nonoxide powders including nitrides, carbides and borides with small particle sizes and even size distributions.
