Recently, the RH-OTB method has become a popular method for the decarburizating steel in many steelmaking works. In the RH-OTB method, the sidewall bricks at about 500 mm above the bottom become the critical area affecting lower vessel life. This area corresponds to the surface of the molten steel, where slag formation and temperature increase occur by the reactions between blowing oxygen and molten steel or metal additives. The slag formed in the RH-OTB lower vessel is different from the ladle slag. The slag has low CaO/SiO_2 and contains Fe-oxides (FeO and Fe_2O_3) and Al_2O_3. The corrosion resistance of the bricks to the lower vessel slag increases with an increase in Cr_2O_3/ (Cr_2O_3+MgO) ratio in the bricks.
