The fracture mechanism in the neck of the alumina-carbon long-nozzle for the continuos casting process was investigated during early casting operation. Stress was calculated by 3-D FEM (finite element method) under the applied conditions of the thermal shock, vibration normalized to the casting direction, attachment forces, etc. To prevent neck from the fracture the following are required.-to set a high preheating temperature,-to control the long-nozzle so that there is little vibration displacement during early casting operation.-to install heat insulating material at the upper-inner surface of the nozzle.-to divide the peak point of the thermal stress from the one mechanical stress by making non-contact parts between the inner-upper surface of the long-nozzle and the molten steel.
