Focusing on magnesia aggregate, which is a principal raw material of magnesia-spinel brick for lining rotary cement kilns, a fundamental study of characteristic properties of aggregates, including crystal size, grain boundary thickness, abrasion resistance, and cement coating adherence, was conducted, with the following key observations:(1) Corrosion resistance of brick tended to increase for magnesia aggregate of high purity, large crystal size, and small grain boundary thickness.(2) Cement coating ability (adherence) of brick tended to increase for magnesia aggregate with high flux content.(3) Thermal spalling resistance of brick tended to increase for magnesia aggregate of high purity and small crystal size.(4) Thermal stress of brick under load tended to decrease for magnesia aggregate with comparatively large grain boundary thickness.(5) The information obtained in this study, related to the characteristics of various kinds of magnesia aggregate, can be used for the improvement of brick, as required for the localized conditions of rotary cement kilns.
