The role of Cr_2O_3 in the improvement of corrosion resistance was considered and discussed with castables of Al_2O_3-Cr_2O_3 system as examples. The castables of Al_2O_3-Cr_2O_3 system have the following characteristicsNear the hot face, the concentration of the Cr_2O_3 component in the refractory decreases as Cr_2O_3 migrates into the slag. The increase in the slag viscosity as the result of the Cr_2O_3 content suppresses the infiltration and corrosion of refractories by the slag.Al_2O_3 and Cr_2O_3 react at high temperatures to form a solid solution resulting in the simultaneous enhancement of high temperature stability and improved corrosion resistance.Additionally, due to the low silica content, the formation of lower melting point compounds in the SiO_2 system does not occur to a significant degree resulting in superior corrosion resistance.As shown above, Cr_2O_3 plays an important role in Al_2O_3-Cr_2O_3 system refractory castables for waste-ash melting furnaces.
