The spinel-magnesia-carbon composite clinker has been prepared through heating of a MgO-Al_(12)Mg_(17) compact in CO atmosphere. Al_(12)Mg(17) alloy changes into Al_4C_3, Spinel, MgO and carbon at lower temperature. Further, the Al_4C_3 reacts with MgO and CO gas at elevated temperatures to form spinel and carbon. The precipitated carbon phase is amorphous and finely distributed among the spinel and MgO phases. In comparing with the other obtained clinkers, presented in the previous works [utilizing MgO-Al or MgO-(Al_2OC)_(0.5)(AlN)_(0.5) compacts]~(1)2)), the present clinker forms at lower temperature, but it oxidizes at lower temperature either.
