Quartzite raw materials from three countries, Japan, China and India were obtained and the quality and microstructure were investigated. Specimens were prepared by pressing pulverized raw materials and firing to various schedules. Thermal expansion and phase transformation were studied with the following results: (1) The raw materials of Japan are composed of fine crystals several tens lam and coarse crystals several hundreds lam and belong to the class of composite quartzite. On the other hand, the raw materials from China and India mainly consisted of coarse crystals and belong to the class of recrystallized quartzite and sandstone quartzite. (2) The quartz in the composite quartzite converts rapidly to cristobalite and tridymite at lower temperature compared with the other quartzites. (3) Among the impurities contained in raw materials the Al_2O_3 component is considered to he the main impurity accelerating the phase transformation.
