The operating conditions of blast furnaces have become more severe for taphole clays, because of the enlarged volume and high pressure operation. The authors consider that it is important not to have any defects in a taphole clay injected in the hearth of a blast furnace through the tap hole to insure stable tapping and tap hole depth, as well as enough tapping time to remove molten iron from the hearth, that is, achieving the required throughput. The specific properties of a taphole clay may be affected by the tar used in the mix ~(1)). This paper describes the relationship between tar viscosity and the hardening behavior of taphole clays.
