Because a liquid phenolic resin has stronger affinity to carbon than water, and as a result of carbonization it forms a carbon-bonded structure, it is frequently used as a binder, particularly in carbon containing refractories. Recently, with the intention of shortening the installation time, resin bonded monolithic refractories have been installed even in warm or hot atmospheres. In the present work, the physical properties and the adhesive property of monolithic refractories with additions of resol or a novolak type of liquid phenolic resin at various casting temperature were investigated. This paper summarizes the results.
