Spinel or spinel-C were applied to SEN parts in constant contact with molten steel and these nozzles were used for casting high-oxygen steel. Spinel and spinel-C are scarcely eroded because they do not react with MnO and FeO in the molten steel and because a dense spinel layer forms on the hot face of the SEN. The developed SEN now has been widely applied to casting high Mn steel, as well as high-oxygen steel. Problems caused by abnormal erosion of a conventional SEN have often occurred when operating conditions fluctuate. However, such problems are prevented, the quality of steel is improved and the service life and number of sequential castings is increased by using the developed SEN. It is certain that the developed SEN is suitable for casting stainless steel, free-cutting steel and Ca-treated steel.
