For refractories, which are used at high temperature, the determination of high temperature properties is essential. However, the measurement of these properties is not always an easy task because of the structural features of refractories, such as coarse grains, glassy phase, pores, cracks, etc. Although a thermal expansion testing apparatus is commercially available for fine ceramics, steel and other materials, it can't be used for refractories. Therefore, Shinagawa Refractories Co. determined that it was necessary to develop a testing apparatus that is suitable for measuring the high temperature expansion characteristics of refractories, and has made an effort to develop a unique apparatus only for refractories. Moreover, the need for automation, labor savings, high precision, database, etc., has become an important requirement. So a serious effort was made to improve these functions of the apparatus ~(1-4)). The development of this apparatus, including the innovation of full automation, is described in this paper.
