Rotary cement kilns have become established as superior equipment for the treatment of various industrial wastes that can be recycled as low-grade raw materials and fuels. In addition, the possibility of secondary pollution is small because the kiln is a high temperature closed system. The variety and the amount of wastes processed in rotary cement Kilns have greatly increased. However, the use of wastes causes fluctuations in the temperature and the oxygen concentration because of unstable combustion conditions. In addition, various alkali salts and heavy metal sulfides are produced by the high content of alkalis, chlorine and sulfur contained in the wastes. These products accumulate in the bricks and gradually destroy the bond of the brick structure. Wear of the bricks and kiln shell is accelerated as a negative result of the treatment of wastes in cement kilns.The authors have attempted to clarify the wear mechanisms and improve the brick structure by analyzing wear performances in field use and reproducing them in the laboratory~(1,2)).The development and field performance of magnesia-spinel bricks with high resistivity against alkali salts are described in this paper.
