The usage of unshaped (monolithic) refractories in many industrial applications has increased significantly, and now exceeds that of shaped refractories. Of the monolithic refractory types, castables are the most widely used products. In this work, the in-situ formation of spinel-carbon (MgAl_2O_4 - C) aggregate, for monolithic applications, was investigated.Spinel-C aggregate was prepared by a two-step heating process of MgO-Al compacts in a CO atmosphere. The precipitated carbon was almost amorphous and finely distributed among the spinel phase. Because of its low degree of crystallinity, the precipitated carbon showed lower oxidation resistance than crystalline graphite.
