Sometimes the unusual erosion of an immersion nozzle at the port occurs accidentally. This may give rise to degradation of the steel quality and breakout due to the change of flow conditions in the mold. The causes of the unusual erosion are mold powder drawn into the spout, reaction between materials composing an immersion nozzle and steel components and others.Improved corrosion resistance of immersion nozzles made from basic material, or spinel, is reported in this paper.The basic material demonstrated excellent resistance against a mold powder and molten steel, and an immersion nozzle with the port part made from it exhibits good performance.
