For continuous casting, various refractories are assembled and joints degrades steel and causes abnormal wear around the joints. Joint packing materials, therefore, play a very important role. In order to improve the airtightness and workability (shape temperatures) of a conventional joint packing material, we explored the use of a new binder and aluminum powder that does not easily react with water. As a result, we developed a joint packing disc material of hard type that was better than a conventional disc material in airtightness at elevated temperatures and in workability. Field tests proved its performance and efficacy. This paper reports the results.
