The durability of slide gate plates (hereafter referred to as SG plates) is generally controlled by two main factors : corrosion resistance and thermal shock resistance. The improvement of ordinary plates has been accomplished by control of the above mentioned two factors. A composite slide gate has been recently developed for the case where one of the two factors dominates and the control of both main factors is impossible. This involved the installation of materials with high corrosion resistance or high spalling resistance in specified locations in the plate. Also, we have tried installing dense materials, for example hot pressed alumina-carbon blocks and sintered zicoina~1) rings from the bore to slide area, to improve the corrosion resistance. However, the thermal shock resistance was poor, and the results were unsatisfactory. As a logical line in the development of special materials, we investigated cermet materials.In this report, we describe our investigations on hot-pressed alumina-chromium and alumina-molybdenum-chromium materials. The former one improved the corrosion resistance and the latter one improved the thermal spalling resistance. We manufactured these materials and compared them in the laboratory to zirconia and alumina-zirconia-carbon materials for corrosion and thermal shock resistance. Some materials were tested in a steel plant. The results of the laboratory and field tests are reported here.
