Refractories for the Tundish (TD), which is a holding vessel for molten steel, include the lining, cover, dam, impact area, tuyeres, upper nozzle, (between TD and mold).Alumina-silica castables are the main products used for lining tundishes~1). The causes of wear are (1) the generation of cracks and peeling-off, (2) reaction with coating materials,(3) corrosion of the slag line, and (4) side wall collapse. The collapse of the sidewall has been prevented by changing the tundish shape~2) and using anchors or dams.These castables have been used mainly in conjunction with a protective coating on the working face, but the lining life is commonly governed by structural spalling, caused by the reaction with the coating materials and by the generation of cracks and peeling-off due to thermal spalling. Accordingly, it is considered that the suppression of cracking and peeling-off during operation is important for the improvement of TD castables.This paper reports the progress of development efforts to suppress cracking and peeling-off, based on several evaluation tests and the results of field use.
