The gas purging plugs for stirring molten steel in ladles are generally classified into two types: one requires a long service life and has a straight pipe for gas injection, and the other requires a high reliability of bubbling and consists of a porous refractory.This paper reports a porous refractory for stirring a special steel. It has as high bubbling reliability as conventional ones and higher durability. It was developed by the improvement in various points.After the reliability of bubbling was secured, the service life of the gas purging plug made from the porous material was increased. The prevention of the metal permeation makes the work of oxygen gas washing easier. The usefulness of the improved porous material was proved on an actual steel ladle.
