The behavior of slag penetration into MgO refractory was investigated by combining in-situ X-ray observation with microstructural analysis of the samples after penetration experiments. The following results were obtained: The slag penetrated rapidly into the refractory and reacted with MgO particles in the refractory. The slag penetrated unevenly into a refractory with nonuniform pore size, the penetration front was even. The rate of slag penetration increased with increasing pore radius, increasing T .Fe concentration in the slag and increasing temperature, and also increased with decreasing slag basicity (C/S ratio). The initial penetration rate of slag with 10 mass percent Al_2 O_3 was less than that for Al_2 O_3-bearing slag into the sample with apparent porosity of 31 percent stopped after reaching 23 mm in height. Under the present experimental conditions, this was much smaller penetration height than that of Al_2 O_3-free slag. In the initial penetration stage, the penetration height was proportional to the square root of penetration time, and the penetration behavior of the slag can be qualitatively explained based on a capillary model. The penetration of the Al_2 O_3 -bearing slag was remarkably suppressed by the formation of MgO-FeO-Al_2 O_3 spinel formed by the reaction of Al_2 O_3 and FeO in the penetrated slag with MgO particles and MgO dissolved from the refractory.
