Refractories installed in various furnaces such as incinerators, waste melting furnaces and boilers used in the environmental field are attacked by high temperature acidic gases such as HC1, halogen gases such as Cl_2 and alkalis and salts in fly ash. The principle cause of wear is often not obvious because the wear progresses through complicated processes that are influenced by various factors such as a thermal stress generated by temperature changes, chemical attack by gases permeated into the refractories or by adherents. Therefore, it is necessary to clearly identify elemental factors related to each damage mechanism.
